What is alco c636?

The Alco C636 is a diesel-electric locomotive manufactured by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) between 1967 and 1968. It was designed to provide heavy haulage on mainline freight trains and was particularly well suited for mountainous regions due to its powerful engine and sturdy frame.

The C636 is powered by a 16-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that produces 3,600 horsepower. Its six-axle configuration provides excellent traction and stability, making it ideal for hauling heavy loads on steep grades. The locomotive also features a modern electrical control system, which allows for smoother acceleration and braking.

Despite its impressive performance, the Alco C636 was not a commercial success. Only 47 were built and most were sold to a single customer, the Southern Pacific Railroad. Today, only a few examples of the C636 remain in service, primarily in South America, although a number of preserved units can be found in museums and heritage railways throughout the United States.
